This was my first time glass-making. It's a really interesting process, and can be kind of scary at first because the ovens are something like 2000 degrees Farenheit. Luckily I had an awesome teacher who made sure I didn't get burned.
What you do is you take a metal rod, put one end of it into the oven where a container of liquid glass is, and twirl the rod around. The liquid glass sticks to the end of the rod.
Then you puncture the liquid glass four times to create air bubbles inside the paperweight, and go back to add more glass to the form. And I rolled it in red glass fibers to add the color.
This was quite outside my experience, but it was a lot of fun! I think the paperweight kind of ended up looking like a crystal ball.
Smooth craftsmanship there. The most I made in an industrial tech class were a basketball hoop with a net too small, a sharp-edged memo pad just waiting to give someone lockjaw, and a candleholder that would be a fire hazard since it'll never stand up in a million years.

Hehe, thanks! You can't really tell in the picture, but the paperweight is actually pretty large, about the size of a fist. That would be a really cool idea though, to make little glass Shikon no Tamas!
That's really cool that you took an industrial tech class. That would be so outside my comfort zone. I'm not a very "hands-on" person, I would be a bit uncomfortable using dangerous tools. The glass-making lesson I took was a one-day thing, about 3 hours long. I also made a free form glass sculpture that sort of looks like a duck or alligator head, but it didn't photograph well.
I can agree about the "not being hands-on" thing. Our instructor handled the welding -- I'll still never get why the curriculum was teaching seventh-graders to make ash trays.
Most of my experience with any crafts came from when my father would find an abandoned cabinet/crate/swivel chair/desk/what-have-you, drag it home, then turn it into something else all together. Years later now, I still smile at that old (patch-work) dresser.
Duck/alligator head? If you get a better picture, I'd be interested.

Ah, yeah, welding would be pretty scary at first, I'm sure. Seventh graders making ash trays? That's public school for ya, I assume. XD
Aw, that sounds really cool how your dad would make stuff.
I don't think I can post the duck/alligator sculpture. The bill of the duck (or snout of the alligator) ends up looking sort of phallic in the photos. LOL
